In the last month in Boston, there were 2 incidents involving sexual assaults committed by drivers of unmarked [gypsy] cabs on their passengers. Each time, a young female chose to take a ride with a gypsy cab driver in a vehicle with no markings or medallion and suffered terrible consequences.
There is a reason that each town or city regulates its cab drivers. In Boston, for example, the police department hackney division does a criminal record check on prospective new drivers and also checks the cabbie’s driving record with the Registry of Motor Vehicles each year before the cabbie’s hackney license can be renewed. These safeguards help to insure that a cab driver is reputable nad safe. The lesson is clear- do not get into a cab unless you are first sure that the cab has a medallion and/or is licensed to pick up fares!
